Conclusion Censorship is still a growing force in the world of today, but the ALA’s Banned Books Week has made a huge contribution to the fight for our rights. Books like The Giver continue to be banned across the country, but Lois Lowry, along with the help of librarians, the common people, and the ALA continue to fight back. Lowry said “Librarians are the great heroes of free speech. My role ends when a book is published. I do not have to be out there, standing up to school boards and angry constituents when a book is challenged. They are the ones on the front lines in book censorship. They are the ones who do not allow themselves to be intimidated, even when their jobs are threatened. I know some school librarians who have lost their jobs over this issue” (Children’s). Censorship is against everything that our forefathers established and fought for when writing the 1st Amendment to the constitution. Could freedom of speech, thought, and actions be the next to go? Do not let your rights be taken away by the imposing forces of censorship.
