The American Library Association got 740 reports of books and library materials challenged from 1995 to 1996. Judith K. Krug said the actual challenges were probably four times greater (Banned Books Week Celebrates). Censorship has been in progress since books were first published in Roman times; however, today there is a rebellion in the censorship world called Banned Books Week. Banned Books Week is an event sponsored by the ALA, as well as many other groups, that celebrates the right to read even though something may seem immoral to others (Hewes). Lois Lowry, the author of a frequently banned and challenged book called The Giver said, “The book is about a society that has, in attempting to protect itself, eliminated all books, all art, all music. The people who bring such challenges are moving in an odd way toward that end” (Children’s). I believe the censorship of books is unconstitutional, being protected by the 1st Amendment, and should therefore be fought against.
